The Death Of Discernment

We are living in the greatest time of deception ever to infect the human race since the days of Noah.

Can you imagine the depravity of man had reached a point where God was so disgusted, He regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him to His heart. (Gen 6:6)

At this point the obvious question should be, what must it have been like?  The Bible gives us some pretty good evidence beginning with fallen angels having relations with the daughters of men and the incredible sexual perversion that resulted.  The people of that day were totally deceived by the enemy.  Could it be that we are seeing a parallel in our day?  I believe we are.

Consider these examples:  A complete disrespect for God, the idea that we are our own god, the notion coming from the one-worlders that we can exceed what God has done through AI, the celebration of every imaginable deviant sexual behavior, Pedophiles now called minor attracted persons, the sexual grooming of our children beginning in grade school, the notion that parents have no rights over their children, Trans-genderism, satanism on school campuses while Christians are banned.

I will stop here for sake of time and space, but you know this list could go a lot longer.  All of this is happening while most decent people have their head in the sand.  Like in the days of Noah we have lost all discernment.  We are being lulled into thinking everything is ok and are boiling to death as surely as that Frog-in-the-kettle.  Why?  Is it possible we can find our answer in looking at Noah?  What kept him from this deception that might give us a blueprint to follow?

This is the account of Noah and his family.  Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with GodGen 6:9

This verse says that Noah was righteous and blameless among his people at that time.  Make no mistake, this does not mean that he was perfect—far from it.  But, compared to what that generation looked like, he was truly a cut above and most importantly, he walked with God.  I would suggest that the latter is what made the former possible.  In God’s eyes Noah was a man after His own heart.  Could this be what is escaping people today, especially those of us who claim to be a follower of Jesus?

Dear friend, we are living in desperate times, and I believe God is looking for modern day Noahs.  there was little Noah could do to impact his culture and probably the same is true for you and me.  Notwithstanding our sincere efforts to work hard to make a difference and continual prayer for our nation, the future, as with Noah, is in the capable hands of God.

So, what does all this mean for you and me today?  Noah not only walked with God, but they spoke as well.  He heard from God.  I am persuaded that this is what we must focus on today.  We must give up our anxiety-driven handwringing and start walking and talking with God and trusting Him for the results.  What does that look like today?

Here are some practical ideas:

  • Double down on the time you are spending with the Lord every day (if you are not—start now).
  • If you are not in a healthy small-group or church, get in one.
  • Make it a habit not to believe anything you are told until you check it out for yourself.
  • Be courageous and stand up for what you know is true and righteous.

And finally, Noah had God Himself to talk with and today we have His Word—that is where you and I will hear from Him.  I suggest you start by meditating on the verses below.  They are an abbreviated collection of verses dealing with deception and demonic influence.  Study them and please share them with others.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 ESV And with all wicked deception for those who are perishing because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore, God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Matthew 24:4-5 ESV And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray.

Matthew 24:11 ESV And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.

And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. ...

Matthew 24:24 ESV For false Christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

Matthew 24:36-39 ESV But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

Mark 13:22 ESV For false Christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.

John 8:44 ESV You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

1 Timothy 4:1 ESV Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,

1 John 4:1 ESV Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

2 Thessalonians 2:3 ESV Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction…

Revelation 12:9 ESV And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

2 Corinthians 11:13 ESV For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.
