Men on Target Seminar

Weekend Seminar/Retreat for Men with Vince

Introductory Session

DSC_0543The seminar begins as Vince very candidly shares his personal testimony modeling the openness and transparency the men need to see before they begin their small group dialogue. The men usually can identify with his gritty and entertaining story and have commented that if Vince can share his story (weaknesses and all) so can they. The second aspect of the opening session is the introduction of the small-group time. The men are instructed to find three other men that they don't know (or know well) and tell their own story. We prompt them at 10 minute intervals to insure that everyone gets a chance to participate. The men are then asked to remain in the same group for the discussion/prayer times which follow each of the remaining sessions. By staying in the same groups men begin to build relationships with each other that will grow throughout the seminar. Vince then introduces the formula for becoming a truly successful man of God which introduces the seminar's five keys teaching.

Key #1 RELEASE

"Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14)

In our first teaching session Vince teaches the importance of properly dealing with FEAR, ANGER, UNFORGIVENESS and GUILT in order to appropriate real release from our past. Some of the issues we deal with are:

  • condemnation vs conviction
  • behavioral links to the past
  • the principle of "letting go"
  • four principles for release
  • God's promise

This is a critical session. Many men are struggling with these issues and are being held back from experiencing an intimate relationship with God, their family and friends because they have not RELEASED THE PAST. Small-group discussion and prayer time follows the teaching.

Key #2 RESISTANCE

"Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:7)

The second key has to do with resisting worldly distractions. This key deals with the tension men feel between who God wants them to be and what the world says they should be. Men will discover the relationship between obedience and power. Some of the issues dealt with in this session are:

  • hunger, pride and greedDSC_0545
  • the choices we make and their consequences
  • natural and spiritual laws
  • competition and peer pressure
  • overcoming our "victim" mentality
  • our lives - like a filter

Small-group discussion/prayer time follows.

Key #3 RELATIONSHIP

"Come near to God and He will come near to you." (James 4:8)

Relationship with God is the focus of this session. Men will discover that intimacy with God is the key to hearing His voice and discovering the vision He has for their life. Some of the issues we deal with in this session are:

  • intimacy with God = strength of vision (the formula)
  • seeking through prayer (six principles for effective prayer)
  • strength through the Word
  • revelation through praise
  • relying on Him for everything

This session has a powerful ministry component. At the conclusion the men are given an opportunity to make a commitment by asking Christ into their life or to rededicate their life to Him. Small-group discussion/prayer time follows this altar time.

Key #4 REVELATION

"Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint." (Proverbs 29:18)

The revelation of God's plan for men's lives is dependent on a close relationship with Him. Vince shares what he calls the three unalterable facts:

  1. God knows us and created us for a special purpose.
  2. God has equipped us with special gifts.
  3. God wants us to discover His purpose for our life.

Some of the key points covered in this session are:

  • discovering your natural gifts
  • finding God's purpose for your life (four steps)
  • how vision contributes to obedience
  • contrasting the competing influences that are attempting to focus our lives

At the end of this session men take a simple self evaluation test that will help them recognize their personal gifts i.e.; teaching, administrative, mercy, ministry, etc. After the men tally the evaluation points, they break into their small groups to further discuss the practical application of these gifts in their lives.

Key #5 RESPONSE

"Keep your behavior excellent among the gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may on account of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the Day of Visitation." (1 Peter 2:12)

Vince shares how a proper response to knowing God and His vision for our life can affect our home, workplace, church and community. Some of the areas covered in this session are:

  • relevant Christianity in a secular world
  • the four principles for effective witnessing
  • obedience versus ability
  • ministry and self worth
  • how to expose - not impose our faith

This practical training has given men a clearer understanding of what it means to be a believer in their everyday life. Small group discussion and prayer time follows the teaching.

Becoming a PATH LEVELER

"Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm." (Proverbs 4:25-26)

This final session covers the importance of maintaining the five keys in our life by participating in a weekly Path Leveler small-group. The men are reminded that they have just spent the entire seminar experiencing the dynamics of a men's small group. The teaching in this session covers:

  • the importance of consistency
  • the power of accountable relationships
  • the how, what, where and why of men's small groups
  • John Wesley's "covenants"

We emphasize that building a weekly small group is the best tool available to maintain and develop a consistent Christian walk at home, church, work and in our community.

Consistency Through Relationships In Small Groups

After each of the six sessions we ask the men to break into groups of four. During this powerful experience the men process the information they just received and establish strong bonds that go on long after our event. At the conclusion of the seminar we bring a teaching on how to become a Path Leveler. This teaching is particularly effective because the men have been modeling much of the information they receive during their small group times. The men are taught how to start and maintain a small group process that will help to ensure their future success.
